The meaning behind, "Learn to live in the south", Is Richard is having a hard time adapting to his new way of life. Richard has always had it tough, but now in the south, he has to learn everything all over again. that is what the quote means.
i do not think you get the point of what this means. Yes Wright must learn what is is like to live in the south but he is a black and he has not learn how to be a black in the white south. wright who has not had to deal with whites now how to get by with them but now that he is working he has to be able to live with them.
